What happens when the most colorful figure in golf finds himself at a turning point in his career? Two-time major champion John Daly, known for his thunderous drives, audacious style, and unrepentant lifestyle, is making headlines once more, but not for his valiant actions on the course. So, what is happening is that after one of his poorest performances to date, Daly, who is 59, is choosing to play in a senior major, instead of the one happening at Quail Hollow.

Daly has made the unexpected decision to compete in the Regions Tradition, a major on the PGA Tour Champions circuit, held in Birmingham, Alabama, rather than the 2025 PGA Championship. Daly was forced to choose between the two tournaments due to scheduling conflicts, and he decided to go with the senior major.

In response to the conflicting schedules, Daly, the 1991 PGA Championship winner, stated, “I can go there and miss the cut and get $6,000. But I’m playing Birmingham. I love Regions. They’re a great sponsor. But why are they scheduling Regions the same week as the PGA Championship, where I can see Brooks (Koepka) and all the guys?”  That is one heck of a question, Daly!  The 2025 Regions Tradition is happening at Greystone Golf and Country Club.

His choice also takes into account his present shape and state of health. Daly has been open about his continued recuperation since undergoing emergency hand surgery in January 2025. His biggest problem, he said, is still getting the ball through on three-quarter shots and making putts. But Daly’s woes didn’t end with the decision—his recent showing on the course raised even more concerns.

Daly’s performance hits a new low at Insperity Invitational

On the PGA Tour Champions circuit, Daly recently had one of his poorest performances in the Insperity Invitational. With an incredible 27-over-par total over three rounds, he finished dead last, 77th out of 77 golfers. He carded scores of +7, +11, and +9, respectively, on three days.

Is John Daly's choice to skip the PGA Championship a wise move for his career longevity?

Have an interesting take?

Daly was runner-up in 2020 and won the Insperity Invitational in 2017, so this poor performance stands in sharp contrast to his prior achievements. His recent setbacks serve as a reminder of the difficulties he has in maintaining his competitive level despite health problems and aging. Despite these disappointments, Daly is still adored in the golf community for his resilient and exuberant nature. His choice to keep playing despite hardship is evidence of his unwavering love for the sport.

A pivotal milestone in John Daly’s legendary career was his decision to forego the PGA Championship in favor of the Regions Tradition, especially in light of his previous difficulties. His enthusiasm for the game and passion are unaffected, even though his performance may decline. As Daly moves through this difficult time, fans will surely keep rooting for him in the hopes of seeing glimmers of the genius that once made him a grand champion.
