A former world no.1 and more: The golfers of Lululemon

Lululemon does not define itself or any part of the company as a golf apparel brand, unlike Nike and Adidas. However, it has still acquired three prominent golfers from men’s and women’s golf. The first-ever deal with Lululemon was reached with former world number one Lydia Ko.

Ko signed a deal with Lululemon in 2019. The Kiwi started wearing the brand’s clothes while doing yoga; impressed with the brand’s apparel, the former world no.1 decided to go don them on the greens as well. According to the 26-year-old, the brand might not have a particular clothing line for golf, but it does align with a golf fit more than one would expect.

Ko told Golf Digest that golf and Lululemon fit well together, and the brand is “great” for golf, as it can promote it to those who don’t play the sport. Furthermore, she stated, “I think that really plays into golf. It’s not just a physical aspect, but it’s mental as well.”

On the other side, in men’s golf, no professional golfer has started wearing the Vancouver-based brand on the PGA Tour except the latest addition, Min Woo Lee. However, a college golf athlete had been signed as the first male golfer by Lululemon.

In 2022, Lululemon signed a NIL deal with JR Smith. Smith returned to college in 2021 after sixteen years of an NBA career. The 38-year-old is part of North Carolina A&T State University’s team, the Aggies. He was the first male golf athlete of Lululemon and could profit off of his name, image, and likeness via sponsorships in the last two years.
