His friendship with Garcia started during the Ryder Cup, but since he is part of LIV, Ryder Cup is not on his list anymore. The bond is shattered, and McIlroy feels betrayed. The Spanish golfer betrayed his friendship, making it immensely hurtful for McIlroy.

In the exclusive interview with The Guardian, he said“I think it is the first time in my life that I have felt betrayal, in a way.” It is a new and unexpected feeling for the former no.1. According to him, the LIV rebels were aware that the bonds made through the Ryder Cup won’t stay intact once they joined LIV. Still, they chose to jeopardize everything. In 2027, Graeme McDowell would have got a chance to captain at Adare. But now the possibilities are gone along with Garcia’s Ryder Cup legacies.

McIlroy feels that it was shameful to let go of the bonds. Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter have Ryder Cup legacies, but now it’s all in the past because their present and future are LIV. The ‘cool head’ golfer believes that the “us versus them” mindset is already out of control and has caused enough damage. Despite being hurt, he does not want anything more spurring between the tours.

After losing the bond, did McIlroy lose everything?

McIlroy must feel betrayed by the bonds lost, but he did not let it affect his performance at the CJ Cup. He successfully established himself as the world’s top-ranked golfer. After achieving many victories, like the Canadian Open and FedEx Cup, the PGA tour member was going through a slump. He had painful low points in his life, but in the end, he emerged victorious at the Congaree Golf Club.
