Though he may have moved on from the Ryder Cup controversy, the fans and media didn’t seem to have forgotten, as new reports suggest Stenson used Ryder Cup to get a better deal at the Greg Norman-led Tour. Let’s take a look at how the Swedish star responded to the rumors.
Did Henrik Stenson use Ryder Cup as leverage for the LIV Golf deal?
Nearly every golfer has been reached out with a deal from the newfound Tour. Stenson, who won the 2016 Open Championship, was just another defector who joined them. However, when he was chosen as the Team Europe captain in March earlier this year, Stenson rejected the idea of joining LIV Golf.

“Yeah, there’s been a lot of speculation back and forth, and as I said, I am fully committed to the captaincy and to Ryder Cup Europe and the job at hand”, said the former European captain. Stenson eventually joined the lucrative Tour for a reported $50 million deal.

Months later, fans are accusing the 2016 Open Champion of awfully using the prestigious Ryder Cup for getting a better deal with LIV Golf. Stenson denied the claims by saying, “I can give you a 100 percent honest answer that it was never the case. I would be willing to take a lie-detector test on that.” Whether it is a lie or the truth, is unclear.
However, the LIV star is confident to take a lie detector test, which depicts his honesty. Moreover, Stenson has also become well-settled in his new Tour and even took a jibe at the Ryder Cup committee after his win at LIV Golf Bedminster, by saying, “I guess we can agree I played like a captain”. He also emphasized on how happy he is at the new Tour, stating it has a much better vibe. Nonetheless, only time will tell how the Swedish golfer will feel in the future.
