Mickelson has been heartbroken at the U.S. Open six times. He’s been a runner-up at the US Open; imagine coming so close to winning a major and failing so many times. One of Mickelson’s biggest heartbreaks came at the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, according to an article in Golf Digest. In 2004, it did look as though he would finally break through and capture his first U.S. Open title. But, unfortunately, he couldn’t. He has finished as a runner-up in 2004, 2009, and 2013 and has been one of the top players in the world for over two decades.

Recalling the championships at Shinnecock, Mickelson said, “That is the one I should have won more than any other.” Talking about it, he further said, “I played terrible all week. But my short game had never been better in my career. … But Shinnecock, I played phenomenal that last day. Given the difficulty of the course, I would say that I have not played better in a U.S. Open in my life.”

Mickelson is one such player who always does his homework before the tournament. Sadly, Phil has won all the other three majors except the U.S. Open. He saw Winged Foot as an opportunity and said, “If I don’t win it in the next two to three years, with the courses we’re playing, then I have to think it’s not going to happen.”

Talking about the idol playing course, Mickelson said, “I love the shaved areas around the holes that can take the ball much farther from the green as opposed to having to hack it out of uncontrollable rough.” He thinks in courses like that the playing skills are better brought into play.

The U.S. Open is truly the unrequited love of Phil Mickelson’s career of golf and Shinnecock Hills’ one is his first heartbreak. Regardless of whether has won the U.S. Open or not, Mickelson’s career has been nothing short of impressive, and he will always be remembered as one of the greatest golfers of all time and the biggest betrayer.
