Phil Mickelson is one of the most controversial golfers of all time. The player has made many records on the field and won six-major championships in his career. However, there was a time when the golf legend was accused of cheating during a tournament. And he once raised his voice against the accusation.

Phil Mickelson fired back at the USGA for the cheating accusation
The golf world was going through a lot when another controversy led Phil Mickelson into some trouble. During his game in a PGA Tour tournament, Mickelson was once accused of cheating using special wedges. According to a legal technicality, players are allowed to play using those wedges. However, there were certain serious cheating accusations made against the golfer at the time.

“It’s cheating, and I’m appalled Phil has put it in play,” said Scott McCarron. But these comments left the golfer unhappy.
Mickelson is one of the very few players who used the Ping-Eye 2 wedge. These wedges are now banned by the PGA Tour under the new USGA regulations. This was mainly because of their V-shaped grooves.
No player would tolerate being accused of cheating, especially after another famous person accused him of the same. Replying to the ongoing comments about his actions on the field, Mickelson took a stand for himself. “It’s a terrible rule. To change something that has this kind of loophole is nuts.”

Lefty said. “But it’s not up to me or any other player… I think that myself or any other player is allowed to play those clubs because they’re approved.”
Did Mickelson continue to use the wedge?
After such a huge controversy, the best thing to do for Mickelson was to give up on his Ping-Eye 2 wedge. McCarron believed that even after a lawsuit approved the golfers to use the wedge, it was still cheating. However, the golf star said that he would “switch back” to his older wedges. But it was not wrong to use those wedges at any point in time, according to him.
