The current world’s number one golfer Rory McIlroy is on a roll. He will be playing at the WM Phoenix Open starting today at TPC Scottsdale. Ahead of the event, he attended a press conference at Scottsdale, Arizona, USA, yesterday. While answering every question asked, the pro golfer talked about the CBS microphone. He explained if he would wear the mic or not and why.

When the reporter asked him if he deserved to be at the top of the ranking, he replied ‘yes’ immediately. The CJ Cup winner believes that he has been consistent in his game and has proved his worth many times. And we cannot deny that. However, when it comes to microphones, will he be comfortable?

Does Rory McIlroy want to try mic for CBS?

The reporter asked if the golfer was comfortable wearing the mic for CBS. He explained his views and said, “It would take a little bit of convincing for me, but I’d certainly be open to it. But given the last couple of weeks and how well I think it’s been received, I’d certainly be open to it.” Further, he also came clean about how other golfers did on the green with a microphone. He appreciated Max Homa and Keith Mitchell.

The CJ Cup winner said, “I think they’ve been great. So I think Max was really insightful in Torrey Pines and Keith Mitchell last week at Pebble. I thought they were very good.” However, he was amazed by the technology and pointed out how great it was. He said, “It’s very unobtrusive; you just put an AirPod in your ear and just have a chat with the guys in the studio.”

We should see him with a microphone soon, as he is leaning toward the idea. Undoubtedly, it will be great to watch the pro handling his game and microphone simultaneously. For now, we can see him taking swings at the golf ball for the WM Phoenix Open. 

Did CBS propose microphones for the golfers?

CBS, a television broadcasting company, has been trying to get golfers to wear microphones since 2020. However, like many other golfers, Justin Thomas was against the idea. But Jordan Spieth wanted to see how it worked out. Therefore, a golfer from his team wore a mic at the Colonial National Invitation.

However, in the case of 2023, CBS debuted its mic strategy mid-game at Torrey Pines. The American golfer Max Homa was their first choice. He agreed to wear a mic at par-5, 13th hole, during the third round of the Farmers Insurance Open. Throughout the game, broadcasters were in constant communication with Homa to learn more about his mindset during the game. And he did well, as said by McIlroy.
