Like everyone in the golf world knew back then, Earl and Tiger shared an unbreakable bond. Every interaction with the golf pro about his father only ever drew the same conclusion: that the two were incredibly close. Back then, the military man and the 15-time major winner’s mother, Tida, were living separately. They were still married and spoke almost daily, but it wasn’t the same for the father and son. “I’ve not spoken to him for a few weeks,” said the ex-army man. “We have the kind of relationship which doesn’t need validation every day.” Earl claimed that the two didn’t need to be in touch constantly or be close to each other physically for their relationship to work. They shared a permanent bond.

Four years after his sit-down with The Guardian, Woods Sr. passed away from cancer. The 82-time winner of the PGA Tour will never forget May 3, 2006. It was when he had lost the person who had inspired and motivated him in life. Heartbroken, he took to his website and wrote, “My dad was my best friend and greatest role model, and I will miss him deeply.”

The golf legend praised his father. “He was an amazing dad, coach, mentor, soldier, husband and friend,” he stated sorrowfully. Tiger flew like he had lost a piece of himself. And rightfully so, the two shared a bond like no other. But his values and teachings live on in the great-grandfather, who thinks of Earl every day.
