However, to Fitzpatrick’s despair, his tee shot ended in the bunker. Many fans, along with the commentators, could be seen disappointed as one commentator said, “What a mistake!”

It surely was a mistake, but the shot following it was a masterclass. The 27-year-old took on the golf ball from the bunker with a chip as he nailed the ball right into the greens near the 18th hole.

The top-quality clutch shot was a huge relief for Fitzpatrick as he had the opportunity to maintain his lead. It truly was the triumphing moment of the Major.

Eminently, Fitzpatrick could not let go of the shot. He shared it on his Twitter page even after a week with a caption, “One week on, think I’ve watched this 9340523 times!!” We can’t blame the Englishman for not getting over the moment because the shot was truly mesmerizing.

Fitzpatrick’s unorthodox chip shot

Fitzpatrick’s recent success has been largely credited to his unconventional methods on the Golf Course. One of the most noticeable approaches in his game is the cross-hand chipping, a technique that he’s employed since 2020.

Before the final round of the PGA Championship at Southern Hills, Fitzpatrick explained why he uses the technique, which places the left-hand low (for a right-hander). He said: “I had a tendency to sort of drive the handle and then the ball would fall off the face, whereas with this, if I did that, I would just shank it. I feel like it’s just much more consistent in strike, flight and spin.”

The advantage of the chipping technique is that the dominant hand (in Fitzpatrick’s case, his right hand) helps propel the club without interference with the clubface. Though the shot has many haters, the Englishman proved all of them wrong by using it to claim the 2022 U.S. Open.
