Jack Nicklaus opens up about his first meeting with the golf legend

Back in 2016, in an interview in depth with Graham Bensinger, the golden bear spoke about the first time he met with the legendary golfer Bobby Jones. Jones was a prodigy as a budding golfer and later became arguably one of the most successful players of all time. He dominated the world of golf from 1923 to 1939. Moreover, in 1930 Jones also won the grand slam in golf. However, he mysteriously retired from golf at 28, two months after completing the grand slam. Jones also never turned professional after winning the grand slam in golf.

The 18-time major championship winner revealed the experience when he met Jones back in 1955 in Virginia for the first time. Jack fans will love to hear about the first time golden bear met the legendary Bobby Jones. Nicklaus was 15 years old when he met Bobby for the first time.

Nicklaus said, “In 1955, I was 15 years old. And I qualify for the national amateur. It was at the James River course Country Club of Virginia, and Richmond, Virginia. And so I went down in the last practice round, I had a shot into the 18th screams a long par four and there’s a gentleman over to cart beside the green and he is treating me like this, and he introduced himself as Bobby Jones.”

He added, “Anyway, he came down to me after the dinner and he said, Jack, just a second. He says I want to come out and watch you tomorrow play a few holes, if you don’t mind is that. So So I kept looking over my shoulder. Where’s Bobby Jones, Where’s Bobby Jones, and all this down down the 10th hole comes a cart. And here’s Bobby Jones coming to watch me play golf. I am a 15-year-old kid.”

The six-time Master winner’s words prove the immense talent that he possessed at a young age. Moreover, it proves how Bobby Jones was a true gentleman.

When did Nicklaus win his last Masters title?

The golden bear won his sixth and the last green jacket in 1986. He won the 1986 Masters at Augusta National with an overall score of nine-under-par. As a result, Nicklaus won the event with a one-shot advantage after the final round. As a result, he achieved a record for most wins at the Masters tournament. Moreover, the World Golf Hall of Fame member carded a final round of seven-under-par, 65 at the major championship event.

His final round of 65 included two birdies and one bogey on the front nine. As a result, Jack moved out in one-under-par, 35. He made a whopping six birdies and only a single bogey on the back to winning his sixth Masters title. Tom Kite and Greg Norman finished as the runner-ups in the major championship. They ended the event with an overall score of eight-under-par and finished in tied second position.
