When Jack Nicklaus speaks, the golf world listens. Such is the glory of the veteran golfer. However, his recent take might not be as pleasing to the other side of the golf world. The Golden Bear seems to have a critical view of the younger players who decided to make the switch to the Saudi-funded league.

This critique is centered around younger players like Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, and Cameron Smith. But why is he so critical of only these players’ moves? After all, some major mature golfers also made a similar decision to defect. So what is Nicklaus’s reasoning?

Why is Jack Nicklaus critical of the younger golfers’ move to LIV?

As the previously divided two sides of the golf world head towards a possibly near convergence in the form of the dreamy “PGA TOUR Enterprises,” many golf world veterans have been vocal in expressing their moves on those who previously chose to defect. Adding his name to the likes of Webb Simpson, Jack Nicklaus has also presented his strong opinions. He has based his critique of these younger golfers on the fact that they have a plethora of opportunities ahead of them.

He put this set of golfers against more mature and older golfers like Phil Mickelson. This mature set were those golfers who made similar choices as they were at different stages of their lives and careers, and Nicklaus still understood their reasoning. The famous pro addressed the effect this would have on the younger players’ legacy. He also talked about how this move would put these golfers in a “pretty awkward position” going forward.

In a conversation on the I Can Fly podcast, Jack Nicklaus said, “Some of the guys who went to LIV was probably okay for them late in their career. You know, the Charles Schwartzel, Branden Grace, Mickelson, Dustin. I don’t think Brooks or DeChambeau or a couple of young guys who went.. Cameron Smith but I thought that was kind of that was odd for them (to defect to LIV Golf) because that puts them in a pretty awkward position for the rest of their life.”

Even though most professional golfers are of the view that the merger is the need of the hour, they also have their perspective on the LIV Golf defectors. Webb Simpson is one PGAT veteran who also expressed how there are differences in the point of view of young golfers.

What was Webb Simpson’s point of reasoning?

Webb Simpson recently chose to be brutally honest about his thoughts on LIV Golf. Unlike Nicklaus’s view of DJ (as an older golfer), the 7X PGA Tour champ centered his opinion on Dustin Johnson’s career aspects, which were not going to count anymore as he made a switch to LIV Golf. He put him in the category of younger golfers.

“I love Dustin (Johnson); he’s a buddy of mine, but he had the opportunity to go down as one of the top 10 greatest players ever, and as soon as he signed his name to LIV, he still could be, but in the record books, we’ll never know. It’s not going to count.

I just think these young guys think about it different, you know.”

This made it clear that the Golden Bear and Simpson are of the view that the shift has surely cost the younger former PGA Tour pros a great deal in terms of their legacies. What is your take on the matter? Share your opinions in the comments section below.
