Jack Nicklaus Thinks Tiger Woods Still Has a Shot at Matching His 18 Major Wins

Winning the most major championships is a dream of every golf professional. However, only a few can get close to the target set by the legend of the sport, Jack Nicklaus. Among the top contenders, the prominent name is Tiger Woods. Recently, Nicklaus talked about the same and showed optimism toward Woods winning more majors.

Jack Nicklaus is optimistic about Tiger Woods matching his record

The 18-time major championship winner spoke about Tiger Woods yesterday. Nicklaus talked about the same in a press conference at the 2022 Memorial Tournament at the challenging Muirfield Village Golf Club. Moreover, the golden bear spoke about how Woods can still win the same number of major championship events as Nicklaus. Not to forget, the Memorial Tournament is the golf legend’s event and his company, Nicklaus Design, also designed the golf course. He hosts the PGA Tour event every year at his golf layout.

The World Golf Hall of Fame member is just three major championships win away after his triumph at the 2019 Masters from equaling Nicklaus’ record for the most major championship wins. Furthermore, the 82-year-old golf legend also talked about the same and is optimistic that Woods can win 18 major championship titles.

Nicklaus said about the 46-year-old matching his record after the media personnel asked him whether Woods still has a shot. He replied, “Still think he might. I would never count him out, incidentally, of anything.”  The Tour veteran’s words prove that he has the confidence that the five-time Masters champion can still equal his record of most major championship triumphs. At the same time, it also shows how Nicklaus believes in Woods even when he is not playing his best. It is truly incredible.

Coincidentally, the former golf professional spoke about Tiger Woods breaking his record at the Memorial Tournament in 2019. He said, “Who knows how long his body is going to stay together. You’ve had as many operations as he’s had, he may be solid enough that it’s all right. And if he is, I think he probably will break my record.”

When did Woods last win at the Memorial Tournament?

The 46-year-old professional won his 73rd PGA Tour title at Muirfield Village in 2012. It was his last triumph at the Memorial Tournament as well. Woods ended the event with an overall score of nine-under-par. As a result, he won by a two-stroke margin on Sunday. Also, the former World Number One carded a final round of five-under-par, 67 to finish on the top of the leaderboard. His final round of 67 included four birdies and one bogey on the opening nine holes. As a result, Woods moved out in three-under-par, 33.
