Joaquin Niemann Wins $4M LIV Mayakoba Denying Sergio Garcia in Playoff Hell, Rahm’s Legions Enjoys Team Champagne

LIV Golf finally crowns its first champions of 2024. The much-anticipated tournament at Mayakoba saw Joaquin Niemann emerge victorious over a field of 54 golfers on a playoff hole. Meanwhile, in the team event, Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII GC managed to win the title of champion at the tournament. Interestingly, the Chilean pro was able to beat runner-up Sergio Garcia with a birdie in the fourth playoff hole after tying his score with the latter through figures of 1-under 70 on the final day, totaling 201 (-12). Meanwhile, Legion XIII GC was able to beat the rest of the teams with a total of 24-under at the El Camaleón Golf Course in Mexico.

The win helps the individual champion of the event take home a cut of $4 million from the total prize pool of $20 million. Similarly, the champion squad of the team event took home an amount of $3 million from the total pool of $5 million for their victory. The win for the Chilean professional marked his first one on LIV Golf, while the group was also able to register its first victory on the circuit.

Niemann trumps against Garcia in the fourth playoff hole

While the Legions XIII GC had managed to cement their place at the top of the scoreboard, the same couldn’t be said for the individual champ and the runner-up. They went ahead to play a total of four playoff holes, of which the first three ended in a draw, with them scoring par in each of the rounds. However, Niemann managed to increase his birdie tally at the event to 18, with one off the fourth hole clinching his win.

It seems Garcia wasn’t able to pull off a playoff win yet again. The pro tied with Talor Gooch back in 2023 at the LIV Golf event in Singapore. However, he couldn’t emerge victorious back then as well. This time around, he finished tied for first with a total of 16 birdies and one eagle over the three days, with six of the former coming off the last day.

Meanwhile, Rahm, the skipper of the team champions, could only finish T3 with a score of 10-under-203, tied with Dean Burmester. But even so, his score, along with those put up by his teammates, managed to propel his squad to their first-ever victory in their first-ever LIV Golf event. Caleb Surrat, Tyrrell Hatton, and Kieran Vincent finished the tourney with scores of 208 (-5), 206 (-7), and 216 (+3), respectively, with the last player carding a 2-under on Sunday.

Nevertheless, it was an exciting final day of golf to kick off what can be called an exciting season for the Saudi-backed league. The action-packed finale did go ahead and satiate the hunger of most fans who tuned in to watch the same. Take a bow, Niemann and members of Legion XIII GC!
