The director of sports auctions at Heritage, Chris Ivy, said, “Major trophies almost never become available in the collecting market.” He further added, “This Claret Jug is a figurative Holy Grail for the advanced golf collector.”

The controversy around the Claret Jug and John Daly

The Claret Jug of Daly is again in controversy after the news of its online auction. The legitimacy of the 12.5 inch trophy is in question. Daly made it very clear in his tweet that he did not sell his Claret Jugs.

This incident took place a few years ago when this piece went up for sale for the first time.

However, the Heritage Auctions cleared the doubts about the trophy being genuine in their original description. They found that there are actually two trophies which Daly himself admits to having in possession. They said, “there is no ownership controversy today, and that this is indeed the one and only Daly Claret Jug available to the collecting public.”

What is next on the list?

Golf collectors obviously love to collect precious trophies won by legends. But what else should they auction next? Perhaps the Green Jacket of Tiger Woods, or maybe his Claret Jug. But we know for sure, whatever Heritage Auctions’ next pick will be, it’s surely going to create a hype among people and bring in a huge inflow of buyers.

Daly had to beat Costantino Rocca to win the 1995 Open at St. Andrews. After Rocca holed a 65-foot putt on the 72nd hole to tie The Open, he prevailed in a four-hole playoff. The reward of this win was a 2.5 pounds, which is now owned by some unknown bidder online. We don’t know who that is, but if we believe he did not buy the replica, then he got himself a fortune!
