Maybe not upbeat, but he did something great, which might be better. Back in 1991, during the PGA Championship, a huge lightning storm killed a spectator, and it sent shudders down his spine. He immediately donated $30,000 to the victim’s two daughters. He didn’t know their name, and he never contacted them again because he was afraid that would bring back frightening memories for them.

14 years later, he received a message that one of those girls was going to medical school and he was filled with joy. What could be better than this upbeat gesture of Daly?

When an interviewer asked him about it, he replied, “In 1989, I was driving from a bar with my brother, Jamie, back home in Arkansas. Probably driving too fast, maybe 55 or 60 in a 45 zone. They’d just fixed the side of the road, and there was gravel. I made a sharp turn, it was kind of wet, and the back right tire just started sliding.”

“They said we slid 186 feet. It was a Blazer, and it flipped twice. I was driving, and I wound up where Jamie was sitting. He got thrown out. The steering wheel wound up almost in the back seat. If I had stayed where I was, if I’d had my seat belt on, I’d have been crushed into nothing.”

Daly further said that both he and his brother, Jamie, ended up with a few scratches. The next morning, they went to the scene and saw how the vehicle’s dashboard was in the back.

Life for Daly has been hard, there is no doubt. A lot of things have changed now. He used to be a ‘lightning rod’ in his youth. But Fuzzy Zoeller was sure that Daly won’t make it to 50. He is 56 now. America loves him. Surely, he has had his difficulties, which include his marriage which ended in 2007.
