What did John Daly do in his hotel room?

Back in the late 80s, Daly was participating in Swaziland, part of the South Africa tour. This was a difficult time for him, since he had to endure a difficult divorce from his first wife, Dale Crafton. After coming back to his hotel room following the first round, he found out that his ex-wife had taken all the money.

“It was after the first round of Swaziland, the South African tour. Me and Dale just got a divorce and she kind of took the money and I was upset that we got a divorce and all that and so, I beat up a hotel room,” he said. Unfortunately, Daly left himself injured in the process of punching a television set. He broke his hand and had to play the rest of the tournament with a bandaged arm.

Daly also recalled being advised to rest by one of his competitors, who currently works as his caddie, named Peter Van Der Riet. “The hand was bandaged up and the guy caddying for me, now Peter Van Der Riet, he was playing with me [for] the first two days. He always calls me pro. Pro you’re not playing, there’s no way you’re playing today,” Daly said.

Did Daly participate further in the event?

The proceedings at the event manifested Daly’s incredible talent in his early days. With a covered-up hand, Daly went on to win the event and collected a sizable sum. “So this big, sweetest guy, Nano, he bandaged it up and says you try playing. I just grip the left hand tighter and next thing you know comes Sunday I beat John bland in the final round and won the tournament,” Daly revealed.

The competition winner also made sure that he paid back the damages he caused in his hotel room. “What I’d done to the hotel was about 20,000 rands (South African currency) worth of damage. Well, that’s what I won in the tournament. So I ended up giving him that back.”

Well, as things turned out to be, Daly would have been glad to not give heed to his present caddie’s advice!
