One of the most eagerly anticipated events in golf began yesterday: the PNC Championship. The event is golf’s way of celebrating family, with tour players competing alongside a family member. The two-day event saw its first-round end with teams closely on each other’s tails. John Daly and John Daly II, who won the 2021 Championship, had a warm message for their fans after the round, both content with their performance and yet hopeful.

The PNC Championship is currently underway in Florida. Team Daly swept away the trophy last year with a two-stroke lead over Team Woods. The father-son duo returned this year hoping to defend their title, but as round one came to an end, their chances looked bleak.

John Daly and his son focus on the silver lining of their performance

Soon after the round ended, the PNC Championship’s Twitter page posted a video of John Daly and Little John. The photo was of the two addressing their fans and talking about their performance at the event. It was captioned, “Team Daly signing out. See you tomorrow.”

The duo discussed their first-round performance in the video. Although it wasn’t the ideal outcome, the pair looked at the silver lining of their game. Daly said, “We actually hit it closer today than we did the first-round last year.” The two-time major winner explained that despite that, they weren’t very high up on the scoreboard because “[we] just didn’t make as many putts.”

Little John agreed with his father, saying there were two putts he wished he could’ve played better, but besides that, “we hit it great,” he said. The duo signed off from the first-round content with their performance but filled with determination to perhaps make more putts in the second round. The PGA Tour veteran said, “We played okay.” We’ll see you tomorrow.”

How did Team Daly fare last year after the first round?

The Daly duo ended the event’s first round at 11 under par, tied for 5th place with seven other teams. They played a bogey-free round and made 11 birdies to get a score of 61. In 2021, Daly and Daly Jr. had each scored a 60, and yet they were tied for second, one stroke behind the leader.

Despite being fifth this year, the pair is only four strokes behind Justin Thomas and his father, Mike Thomas, who sit atop the scoreboard. They will certainly be looking to make a comeback and get back to the top.
