John Daly confesses his love for drinking

With only an hour left before his tee time in Arnold Palmer Invitational in the late ’90s, Daly relaxed with a pack of cigarettes and a diet soda at the Bay Hill Lodge. One of the people asks the golfer whether he is an alcoholic to which Daly bluntly replied, “I don’t think I am”.

The two-time Major winner further added, “I think I let people try to convince me that I am, and that’s the worst thing I could have done. I don’t drink any more than anybody else my age. I don’t drink to solve problems. I don’t drink around my kids. I don’t drink to get bombed any more. I hate that feeling”.

After finishing his rant on how he doesn’t use alcohol for any of his personal problems, Daly revealed the simple reason for his drinking addiction by saying, “I just drink to relax”. Daly then headed over to complete his round at the invitational. Two days later, Daly managed only nine pars in the final round and signed for an 87.

Though the 56-year-old has been to rehab twice in his life, he could not overcome his struggles. While some ask the question of how great of a career John Daly would have had if he didn’t have a drinking addiction, the golfer has also revealed that he plays the best golf after getting drunk. So maybe Big John wouldn’t be as great without an assist from his addiction. Or maybe he could have won a lot more without the help of alcohol after all.
