19 events, 17 cuts, and four top-10s. These are the 2025 stats of golf’s once Golden Child, Jordan Spieth. He was last seen at the TPC Southwind in early August. The occasion was the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Finish? T38. Four months in, and the public craved for a sight. Until finally they got it at a very unusual place.

The 12-time PGA Tour winner was spotted in Jones AT&T Stadium, Lubbock, attending the highly anticipated college football match between Texas Tech and BYU. The game, one of the biggest of the regular season, saw Texas Tech claim a 29-7 victory. It marked BYU’s first loss of the year. Through the maddening chaos, ESPN dropped a video in which Spieth was on the grounds.

It is not immediately clear why Spieth chose this particular occasion for his rare public outing. But if one were to take a wild guess, then the reason could be his wife, Annie Verret. She is a Texas Tech alumna, having graduated from the university’s Rawls College of Business. Spieth, too, is a University of Texas product. So, these could be the reasons for his presence. Yet, for fans, it was a rare sight.

After withdrawing from the Travelers Championship in June due to neck spasms, Spieth’s season has been quite uncertain. His exit from the event brought a streak of 297 consecutive PGA Tour starts without a withdrawal to an end. He appeared thrice after that, registering middle-of-the-pack results. But since then, it has been silent.

And it’s not like he can afford to sit at home. Spieth is currently ranked 57th in the FedEx Cup Fall standings. The top 60 get to automatically qualify for some of next year’s Signature events. But Spieth’s hiatus will put him at a risk of falling further down in the ranks, which has raised several eyebrows. Questions are being asked if the Texan is relying on his star power and sponsor exemptions to secure invites. Through it all, Spieth has not once given a reason for his continued absence.

A reason could be injury, as the same issue has pretty much plagued his last two seasons. In late 2024, he underwent left-wrist surgery to reconstruct a tendon, a persisting issue from 2017! It changed his playing style further, but he did have flashes of brilliance. He was able to secure a solo fourth at the WM Phoenix Open, a T7 at the Memorial, and a T14 at the Masters. For someone struggling for years, these were a great result. But then came the neck spasms.

But even through his absence, Spieth has remained active in other areas. He recently conducted a star-studded charity event for his Foundation. And in December, he will help in conducting the National Junior Tour Powered by Under Armour. These updates have been out there if one follows Jordan Spieth on his Instagram account. Anyway, December will be another reason for Spieth’s fans to be elated.

Jordan Spieth is set to return in December, but not for a comeback

Jordan Spieth is slated to play in Tiger Woods‘s Hero World Challenge. This event will officially mark his first start in over 4 months. Two-time defending champion Scottie Scheffler will be there, who also has been on a hiatus (the only difference is, he can afford one). Then there will be US Open champ JJ Spaun, and of course, Speith’s buddy Justin Thomas.

In all practicality, Spieth shouldn’t expect the competition to be easy. If he were looking for a comeback, fall events should have been his aim, as most of the top players choose not to play. These would have offered him an open window to climb up his ranks. And whatever result he secures on the Hero World Challenge, it won’t matter as it’s not an official PGA Tour event.

Moreover, if one were to go by Speith’s own accounts, then the Texan believes his comeback will be in 2026.

“Next year’s going to be a really good year for me, I can feel it,” he said a few months back. “It’s all coming along. I’ll be healthy, and just structurally putting, the mechanics are all getting really, really close.”

His belief in health and golf mechanics could be another hint behind his hiatus. Maybe he has been staying out of contention to completely focus on his health and working on his swings, due to which he has suffered tremendously in the past. If that’s the case, will fans see a glimpse of their old Golden Child soon?

Well, that is indeed Spieth’s ultimate goal. “One good offseason should get me nailed down to where I could be as good as I’ve been. That’s my goal,” says the Texan.
