Ever since the OWGR system was updated, several golfers and officials have been speaking about it. Not everyone found the new system as beneficial or “fair” as the others, at least the ones who focus on the rankings in the first place. Thankfully, it is not the case for former World no. 1 Scottie Scheffler. When asked about his stance on not being the world’s no. 1 player anymore, his response cleared his perspective in only a few statements.

Scheffler has made a name for himself with countless epic performances throughout the last few years. Holding the no. position on the OWGR leaderboard for 31 cumulative weeks, the golfer has proved himself enough times. However, when asked about how important the rankings were to him, Scheffler had an unexpected response.

Jon Rahm, who recently claimed to be the best player in the world, is currently on top of the OWGR leaderboard as world no.1. The position was also earlier held by Rory McIlroy a few times. Hence, it has been more of a ping-pong game between the three professionals when it comes to the first position. However, it does not worry Scheffler. In fact, the rankings are nothing more than ‘an algorithm’ for the golfer.

“I think the ranking is just an algorithm,” he said. “For me, I would much rather win the tournament than get back to No. 1 in the world. So that will be my focus going into tomorrow is just going out and having a solid round of golf, and the rankings will be the rankings.”

Unlike some of the other best players on the PGA Tour, Scheffler didn’t have anything against the new OWGR system. As per his statements, the ranking system was doing a commendable job of giving recognition to the players who deserved it. “It’s tough to rank professional golf, and the OWGR has done a good job of that over a long period of time,” he said. However, his focus still remains on stepping out on the field and winning tournaments over anything else.
