Despite the resounding success of the LIV Golf event in Washington, DC, Trump’s ambitions to host The Open Championship at his prized Turnberry golf course have hit a roadblock.

According to The Telegraph, the R&A chiefs have made it clear that the South Ayrshire venue will not be considered for golf’s oldest major as long as Trump retains ownership. This disappointing news comes despite Trump’s claims that “everybody wants to see the Open Championship here,” during his recent visit to Turnberry.

The fallout from the latest report

Trump’s acquisition of the Turnberry links course in 2014 had fueled his desire to showcase the course on golf’s grandest stage. Regrettably, an Open Championship has not graced the hallowed grounds of Turnberry since 2009. And it appears that this trend will continue until the 76-year-old former president relinquishes ownership.

The R&A’s stance on Turnberry hosting The Open remains unchanged since the US Capitol attack in January 2021. Concerns over potential protests and security risks led to the venue being deemed unsuitable for staging the prestigious tournament. The R&A further emphasized that Trump’s divestment from the property is a prerequisite for any change in their decision.

Despite these setbacks, Trump’s involvement in the golfing world will continue as LIV Golf’s invitational circuit features three stops at Trump-owned venues, including the recently concluded Washington DC event. The upcoming LIV events at Trump’s Bedminster course and Trump Doral in Miami.
