Golf fans and athletes have been talking about the upcoming season of the sport next year. Various changes are being made by tours to the game’s format, keeping in mind the threat posed by LIV Golf. However, the official bodies also recently announced a few changes to golf rules. And among these is one that will be a big help for players to escape controversial disqualifications.

But there have been times when even some of the best golfers have been disqualified from tournaments for breaking important rules. And the result is mostly a confusing exchange of statements between the officials and the golfer.

However, the 2023 season is going to bring some newly updated rules to the sport. And it is all for the players and to provide them ease in playing. One of the most talked-about updates is Rule 3.3b. As per Golf.com, Rule 3.3b (2) previously imposed “a penalty of disqualification when the hole scores on the scorecard haven’t been certified by the player, the marker, or both.”
In simpler words, a player could be disqualified from a tournament in case they forgot to sign their scorecard. And despite amazing performances and track records, a minor mistake could cost a player an important tournament.

But in the upcoming 2023 season, things will be a little easier for the players. The USGA and R&A recently announced that the annual review of changes in the Rules of Golf will now go by Model Local Rule L-1.

According to this update, the penalty for not signing the scorecard will be reduced from disqualification to a minor two-stroke penalty. Hence, a big relief for the players.
It will still mean that the players will be punished for failing to sign their scorecards. However, the degree of the punishment would be a lot lesser than earlier.

Moreover, the main motto is to remind the players to follow golf rules. And that includes singing their scorecards. As per reports, the rule will be officially available starting January 1 for the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LPGA Tour.
