Someone who’s been watching the game long enough knows that on the course, a golfer is sometimes only as good as the caddie that accompanies him through the holes. And this is just as true, if not more, for Justin Thomas and his veteran caddie, Jim “Bones” Mackay.

If you aren’t already aware of the legendary Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay, who just came out of retirement to Caddie, then it’s high time that you learn more about him. Bones moved on from being a golf commentator, back to being the man with the bag, and lending a helping voice to the ears of former world number 1 Justin Thomas.

Who was Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay before Justin Thomas’ Caddie?

As golf writers, we can’t judge you if you did not recognize Bones before his caddying spell with Justin Thomas, but as golf fans, Well, we still won’t, but we really could, especially considering that the man once caddied for the legendary Phil Mickelson.

Phil and Bones could probably contest for one of the best duos to ever grace the tour if golf was ever considered a team sport. In their two decades of togetherness, the duo won five majors and 41 PGA Tour events.

Bones is one of the most successful caddies of all time in the golf world. However, after hanging up his bag in 2017 and splitting ways with Mickelson, Mackay went on to work as a commentator until Justin Thomas’ latent talent pulled him and his bag out of retirement. Their first stint together was in 2018, when Jim came out of retirement to caddie for a week to fill in for Justin’s regular bagman, Jimmy Johnson.

Where did he get the nickname ‘Bones’?

Legend or rumor has it that Jim got the nickname from veteran golf legend Fred Couples during his 1990 tour season. Fred started calling him ‘Bones’. This was because he could never remember Jim’s name but would always notice his tall and lanky 6-foot-4-inch frame.

Ever since, Mackay has walked hole from hole, through some of the best courses in the world. What makes it all the more special is that the pro caddy did so alongside some of the best players to ever grace the game of golf.
