Rory McIlroy has been at the center of golf media for weeks now. From his inconsistent drives on the course to his controversial opinions on the rollback, the Irishman has spent tons of time in front of a camera. And he has once again found himself in the public eye. But this time it is for a magnificent piece of skill that has the golf world questioning his stance on the rollback of the golf ball.

Golf world goes berserk over McIlroy’s drive

McIlroy has of late been troubled with inconsistent performances, for which he credited his new driver, the TaylorMade Stealth 2. Fans, however, appear to be seeing his old focused-driving self this week. He is currently competing at the WGC-Match Play, and he tweaked his driver with a Fujikura Ventus TR Blue shaft. And it seems to be working for him!

At the 18th hole on Thursday, the golf pro drove the ball a whopping 375 yards. The ball had flown at an astonishing speed of 188 mph straight onto the green, just 4 yards from the hole. And boy were the fans impressed! From “UNBELIEVABLE” to “wow,” they were left speechless on Instagram with his brilliant drive. One fan even wrote, “A great hit!”

But his drive also had fans wondering and questioning his recent comments about the rollback. McIlroy, of course, had openly declared that he was all for the rollback being implemented. But this shot of his left fans bewildered about that decision “Bet he doesn’t want the rollback on the golf ball now lol,” commented one fan. “I guess he will change his mind about using the shorter balls now,” said another.

Many fans believed that the 4-time major winner’s shot contradicted his bold statements in favor of the rollback. They claimed that it was drives exactly like this that made the rollback a bad idea. “But let’s roll the ball back because stuff like that isn’t enjoyable to watch at all,” said one fan sarcastically. “If he was 45 yards back in the fairway it would be better for the game *USGA thinking*,” wrote another.

The shot had surprised Rory McIlroy himself

From some fans claiming it to be the “shot of the year” to others calling it the “greatest” shot they had ever seen, one thing was certain: it was unquestionably one of the best shots at the event and possibly on the Tour. In fact, the splendid shot had surprised McIlroy himself. “I certainly didn’t expect to fly it on the green,” he claimed in the post-round interview on Thursday.

The 23-time PGA Tour winner explained that he had expected the shot to “land into the upslope” and probably be 10 or 20 yards from the hole. But fortunately for him, it was much closer than that. “I didn’t imagine I could fly it on the green,” he stated still in disbelief over the shot’s brilliance.
