Viktor Hovland became the first-ever Norwegian to win the US Amateur in 2018. He began his professional career in 2019 and has since won six PGA Tour victories. Although the 25-year-old has yet to win a major championship, he currently has his heart set on something more immediate – the World-Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba.

Hovland won the World-Wide Technology Championship in Mayakoba for the past two seasons. Hence, winning it this time would make it his first Triple Crown. If he does win, he will be one of the only four people to ever have a three-peat, and the youngest one to do so, beating the G.O.A.T., Tiger Woods, by a few months.

Hovland’s experience at the El Camaleón Golf Course

The World-Wide Technology Championship is held at the El Camaleón Golf Course. Viktor Hovland is the two-time defending champion, having won in 2020 and 2021 consecutively. In 2018, Hovland played at the Mayakoba course for the first time. He was an Oklahoma State junior, and he missed the cut by a stroke. In 2019, Viktor revisited the course as a pro but unfortunately missed the cut again by one.

2020 proved to be a good year at the course for Hovland. He finished the game with three birdies in his final six holes. His final round score ended at 6-under 65 to clench the cup. He beat Aaron Wise by one stroke and ended the match with a total score of 20 under par.

Viktor returned as the defending champion in 2021, quite confident. He said, in the pre-game interview, “I feel like I’m putting really well, and I made some strides around the greens, so yeah, if I can just kind of keep hitting the ball like I usually do, I should be able to make some birdies this week.” Of course, Viktor Hovland went on to grab the title again. This time he beat Carlos Ortiz by 4 strokes, ending at 23 under par.

How are the chances looking for Viktor Hovland to pull off a three-peat?

Hovland’s game next week in Mayakoba will mark the 13th time a player has attempted a three-peat. Of the previous 12, only three have succeeded: Tiger Woods, Steve Stricker, and Stuart Appleby. With Tiger getting a three-peat six different times in six different events. As far as the statistics go, it seems like the odds are stacked against Hovland.
