Steve Williams is probably one of the best caddies. Having driven the cart for many golf stars, he’s known well for his sharp eye and a brilliant mindset. But his career caddying for golf pros all began with a lie he told Greg Norman. And had it not been for the fib, perhaps he would have never become part of the sharks’ team? So, what was this lie? And was the golf great appalled? Let’s find out.

For seven years, the 20-time PGA Tour winner worked together. They were together when he got his first Tour win and even his first major win. It was because of his time with Norman too that he eventually caddied for Tiger Woods years later.

Back in 2017, Williams sat down with Graham Bensinger on his show. One of the hosts’ first questions was about his infamous lie to Norman. Just thinking about it made the caddie chuckle. He said, “I started caddying for Greg, and at the time he asked me how old I was, and you know I said I was 20.”

Williams revealed that he was actually only “seventeen” at the time. He added that a few years later, the shark automatically assumed that he was 22 or 23 years old. But he was only 20 at the time. It was Norman’s wife who eventually caught onto the caddies’ lie when she was flying with them once.

when she took his passport to get the tickets. She realized his true age. He was caught red-handed in the lie. But years had passed, and he and the two-time major champion had grown close. They just laughed it off. “We had a great laugh about that,” he said, claiming Norman wasn’t upset at all. “He thought it was great.”

Why did the caddie lie to the shark?

Williams strongly believed that age and talent had nothing to do with each other. “Age didn’t have anything to do with how good or how poorly you could do the job,” he claimed. “If I was 17 or 20, you probably couldn’t tell the difference.” But that was just his belief. He wasn’t sure if Norman would hire a 17-year-old since it seemed like a young age.

He didn’t want to take a risk with what was a big break in his career. And he certainly has no regrets about leaving. The shark, fortunately, took the news very well. “We still laugh about it,” said his ex-caddie.
