On the 80th birthday of the ‘Golden Bear,’ two years ago, Golf.com in his honor did a ‘Jack at 80’ coverage where they covered the best memories of various golfers with him. Bryson DeChambeau told golf.com about how his first meeting with Jack Nicklaus went awfully wrong. But what went wrong?

While describing his first memory with the 18 times major winner, Bryson DeChambeau said, “My first memory of Mr. Nicklaus was when I was a kid. My dad would talk about Jack Nicklaus and his 18 majors. At that time, I was six, seven, or eight, and Tiger was starting to come about. There was talk of Tiger passing Jack’s record.”

In further conversation with golf.com, he said, “When I finally met Mr. Nicklaus, I don’t think he liked me very much initially. The first Memorial I played in we did a clinic, and I did this trick shot where someone stands in my follow-through. I don’t think he liked that.

DeChambeau’s fondness and respect for Nicklaus were visible in the way he spoke about him. His admiration for the legend of the legends was so evident when he said, “He once told me, ‘Hey, you’ve got the formula. Keep working hard and you’ll be fine.’ That was it. Sometimes the best advice is being told that you’re good enough.” 

Jack Williams Nicklaus popularly known as the ‘Golden Bear’ has won 18 majors, a record that remains unbroken to date. With Tiger Woods winning his 15th major, the debates opened on whether he can break Nicklaus’s stellar record. Tiger Woods had something really sweet to say about the man who had defined golf. Tigers’ actual words were: “What he’s done for the game of golf in 80 years is incredible, and it’s not only what he accomplished as a player. Don’t forget how many golf courses he’s designed around the world — probably near 500. F—in’ crazy.”

Truly, Jack Nicklaus’ work is appreciable and the golf community is lucky to have him in its hall of fame.
