While most of her fans believe that Thompson still holds the record for being the youngest player to qualify for the US Open, Lucy Li proved them all wrong. The saying that age is just a number was once again given value when an 11-year-old California-based golfer made her debut.

According to records, Thompson qualified for the US Open at the age of 12. At such an age, most women athletes are simply professional sports aspirants and are trying their level best to move ahead. But for Thompson, it was in the 2007 US Open, where she shot 86-82. However, surprisingly, her record was surpassed by 11-year-old Lucy Li at the 2014 US Open.

According to Ron Kroichick at the San Francisco Chronicle, Li’s record was extraordinary in many ways. “Li broke the record previously held by Lexi Thompson, who was 12 when she made the field for the 2007 Women’s Open,” he said“Breaking barriers is nothing new for Li—last summer, at 10, she became the youngest player ever to advance to the USGA Women’s Amateur.”.

People usually have mixed approaches to any given situation. And similarly, some felt that such competitiveness at such a young age was harmful to the sport. It was so because Li’s amazing record was making the rest of the players weak. However, that was not true. Most people believe that such records help the sport to grow and the players to aspire for more. Moreover, the viewers are even more excited to see young players breaking and setting records in golf.

Li also made many other records, including the time she became the youngest ever player to advance to the match play of the event. She even qualified for the US Women’s Amateur Public Link Qualifier. So many records at such a young age are hard to expect from an athlete. But to everyone’s surprise, Li managed to get her name ahead of one of the world’s greatest women golfers.
