Despite his move to LIV Golf, Cameron Smith has won the 2022 PGA of America Player of the Year award. After a great performance last season, the Aussie hardly had few competitors competing for the award. Following the news of his award, Greg Norman, CEO of LIV Golf, took to Twitter to congratulate the golfer on his accomplishment.

Cameron Smith had an amazing 2021/22 PGA Tour season. The 29-year-old had three wins which include his Players Championship win along with his maiden Major title. Smith completed the Major in St. Andrews with a score of 20 under par, joining the elite golf clan to hold the Claret Jug.

After a successful season in the PGA Tour, the Aussie decided to make the jump to Greg Norman-led LIV Golf. Despite being a defector, the PGA of America announced Smith has the recipient of the best player of the year award. Greg Norman congratulated his fellow countryman on Twitter.

Though Norman has been vocally against the PGA Tour as well as the PGA of America, he didn’t mention much about his nemesis. Instead, he only used the platform to wish Smith on his amazing feat.

Greg Norman tweeted, “HUGE!! Cam Smith, 2022 @PGA Player of the Year. Well deserved after a spectacular season. Congrats mate”. The CEO also used the Australian flag emoji to display his joy on the Smith’s award.

Scottie Scheffler was considered a close candidate for the award, but the 2022 Masters winner failed to secure more votes. On the other hand, Rory McIlroy claimed the Vardon Trophy, which is given to the leader in scoring average in the PGA Tour.

Cam Smith moved to the lucrative series after finishing the 2021-22 PGA Tour season at the FedExCup Playoffs. Nonetheless, with Greg Norman managing to grasp top PGA Tour talents in recent times, he must be pleased to sign a prospect of the caliber of Cam Smith.

With this just being the start of both LIV Golf, it would be interesting to see how Greg Norman leads the Saudi-backed Tour in the future. As far as PGA Tour is concerned, it must be difficult to lose your best player to your arch-rivals. Regardless, it’s time for Cameron Smith to celebrate his PGA of America Player of the Year award at LIV golf. What a weird sight!
