For the sixth event of the year, LIV Golf will return to The Grange, Adelaide. LIV Golf Adelaide was arguably the most enthralling event on the breakaway circuit in 2023. Interestingly, it was profitable for Australia’s economy too. With its return to Southern Australia on April 26th, many of its modern traditions, like shoey, will also make a comeback.

If you aren’t aware of what the tradition is, it essentially means chugging a cold beverage from a shoe! Yes, a literal shoe! Here are some of the top moments so far that have happened wherein the golfers have chugged a drink from a shoe.

In the 2023 edition of LIV Golf Adelaide, DJ Fisher asked the Aussie native to chug a drink at the par-3 12th hole, aka the Watering Hole of LIV Golf. The golfer initially declined the offer but after concluding the first round, Fisher called Smith on the stage in front of the massive crowd and asked again.

This time, the 1-time major winner could not ignore the request, and Fisher poured the beer into Nike shoes. Minutes later, Smith chugged the drink in front of the large crowd celebrating the inaugural LIV Golf Adelaide event.

Talor Gooch

It was in the 2023 season as well. Talor Gooch had just won his first LIV Golf title, which catapulted his run to win the LIV Golf Individual at Miami. The then-Range Goats member won by having a 3-stroke lead over Anirban Lahiri. He came out on the winning podium with the black trophy, took his shoe out, and drank the champagne.

He now returns as the defending champion at The Grange and will surely like to recreate his shoey moment to get his first win in the 2024 season.

Ian Poulter

Ian Poulter was at the front of The Grange’s club, signing hats and taking pictures with his fans on the other side of the ropes. Amidst that, those standing in the club’s gallery started chanting, “Shoey, Shoey, Shoey.” Meanwhile, a shoe was thrown out, with Chase Koepka joining in.

After a few moments of hesitation, Poulter gave in and drank from the Nike shoe. He went straight back, giving away autographs, and the fans were also delighted.

Bryson DeChambeau

The LIV Golf players reached Adelaide’s range and started to flock even to the practice sessions. One such round of Bryson DeChambeau had many spectators. The fans were hyping up DeChambeau’s every shot and while he teased them, people started cheering for a shoey again.

DeChambeau finished his range session and was provided with a shoe. He first doubtfully smelled the shoe, and after taking a deep breath, he gulped it all down. Throwing away the shoe later, the Crushers GC captain had “the greatest range session of all time.”

Dustin Johnson

The four-time major winner is the odd one out in the top shoey moment at LIV Golf Adelaide. Why? Because he has never had any, and honestly, Dustin Johnson is quite opposed to the idea. Even when his team, 4Aces GC, won the LIV Golf Adelaide Team event, he opted out of the shoey.

Johnson explained his repulse to drinking from a shoe. He said, “It’s not the drinking of beer from the shoe; it’s putting the shoe back on after drinking beer,” which disgusts the 39-year-old pro. So even if his team defends the title at The Grange, Johnson will not be seen indulging in a shoey.

Are you excited to see who wins in Adelaide this year? Will the defending champion defend his title or will there be a new winner? Stay tuned to find out! Which one is your admired shoey moment? Let us know below!
