Lately, things seem to be working out in favor of LIV Golf. Last month, a nearly $3,000,000,000 deal saw the PGA Tour backtrack on its previous criticism of the Saudi-backed league and formally acknowledge LIV as both its equal and a partner. Meanwhile, players from the breakaway league have also achieved amazing outcomes in major events this year. Currently, the ninth LIV event has gotten underway in London after a successful outing in Valderrama.

However, things may soon go haywire for the golf circuit, as cracks have begun to show in the unity and camaraderie of its players. Ahead of LIV’s event in London, a new rift seems to be brewing between two of the league’s top players. Let’s jump in to find out more!

An unexpected rift is brewing within LIV Golf

Just days ago, at LIV Valderrama, Matthew Wolff finished in 44th place in a field that boasted 48 players. This was his 5th consecutive dismal showing, which also includes a withdrawal from May’s event in Washington DC, right in the middle of the event. And no one is more disappointed in Wolff than Brooks Koepka.

Both golfers play together in Smash GC, the LIV Golf team captained by Koepka. “I mean, when you quit on your round, you give up and stuff like that, that’s not competing,” the 5-time major winner told Sports Illustrated. In LIV Golf DC, Wolff was ranked 46th out of 48 players after 36 holes before he decided to withdraw from the final round.

I’ve basically given up on him—a lot of talent, but I mean the talent’s wasted,” Koepka further shared. Wolff initially had a good start to the LIV Golf season. He had achieved three top-10 finishes, including a tie for fifth place in Florida in April. However, he fell off in the next event, finishing T44 at LIV Adelaide.

Wolff was also partially removed from Smash GC’s social media pages following his withdrawal. The brewing disagreement can fare terribly for Greg Norman’s league, which prides itself on its team element. In fact, the team competition on LIV is what sets it apart from its rival golf tours. The PGA Tour, for instance, boasts no team element outside of the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup.

Has Matthew Wolff responded to team captain Brooks Koepka’s comments?

Before defecting to LIV in 2022, Matthew Wolff had seen considerable success on the PGA Tour. He became a winner on the Tour on just his third start, edging past Bryson DeChambeau and Collin Morikawa to win the 3M Open in 2019.

I’m here, you know, trying to do what I can to play the best round of golf, and that’s going to help the team,” the 24-year-old told Sports Illustrated regarding his current form. According to the outlet, Wolff chose not to answer when asked whether he wanted to be on a different team.

Besides Wolff, the other players on Brooks Koepka’s team are Jason Kokrak and Koepka’s younger brother, Chase. Currently, Smash GC is ranked seventh in the team standings.
