Phil Mickelson clears the air around a fan’s absurd allegations

Author Alan Shipnuck is writing a biography of Phil Mickelson. He uses the format to dive into the backstory of the LIV golfer’s relationship with his caddie, Jim Mackay. Their relationship ended after a 25-year run, and the reasons were worth $900,000.

Even though both refrained from commenting about their split, Alan Shipnuck’s sources revealed money as a long-time source of contention between them. The claim was that Mickelson made various promises to pay his caddie, Mackay, a percentage of the bonuses, but he failed, and the amount built up to a staggering $900,000.

A fan on Twitter (X) asked Phil if he had paid Mackay his dues, indicating that he should admit publicly that he “screwed him.” And sticking to the facts, Phil Mickelson responded with receipts for the payments to his former caddie.

He wrote, “Not sure where you got your ridiculous information. Here you go. You’ll see I paid him 13.9% which is $1 million more than the going rate. The reason is, I chose to pay him money from my retirement account which I’ve not yet received but chose to anyways. I don’t know another pro who does this.”

According to Alan Shipnuck’s sources, Phil Mickelson was also increasingly irking the caddie because he disregarded his advice and had no set arrival time, leaving Jim Mackay to frequently wait for him for a very long time.

Lefty offered clarifications about the conversations surrounding him in the past, too

The same sources as Alan, the author, also state that Lefty did pay $400,000 twice to Mackay at different intervals, but till then, their relationship had become strained enough to let go. They had a publicly respectful split due to their careers. However, their relationship, in the end, was far from how it started.

Just like he took a stand for himself right now, Phil Mickelson has opened up in the past as well. He clarified the allegations against him after reading Billy Walters’s book. The 53-year-old LIV golfer spoke about the upcoming football season and claimed he would not be betting this season.

He went so far as to clarify that it is not the money that’s ever been the issue, but his habits and his self-assessment that have led him to decide to enjoy the game without his addictive habits. He also admitted that he often confused his enablers as friends, which is precisely what made him push to do what he did.

With these self-actulizational insights, it seems like the LIV star’s addition, which Billy Walters’ book, “Gambler,” revealed cost him over a billion dollars, is taking a turn for the better. And while he heads on that journey, the entire golf world undoubtedly wishes him well!
