The name Alan Shipnuck has gathered noticeable popularity in the golf scene of late. Perhaps notoriety might be a better fit, but we leave that to you to decide. Following his claims about Phil Mickelson, a recent excerpt from his book has targeted Rory McIlroy.

Justin Thomas jumped into the conversation and expressed his contempt for sourceless claims on golfers being a sick trend. Brooks Koepka pitched into the discussion as well. But he received quite a lot of backlash in the comments.

Brooks Koepka faces unexpected backlash

The recent quote from the book talks about an unnamed former Ryder Cup teammate of Rory McIlroy who claimed that McIlroy has been bought and paid for. The note said a few more defamatory things about the Ryder Cup veteran.

Responding to this, Justin Thomas, in his tweet, spoke on behalf of golfers on the PGA tour and said how it is sick that such claims from unnamed sources keep coming up online. He specifically said ‘players from the tour.’

By the look of it, Brooks Koepka wanted to include himself and speak on behalf of other LIV golfers as well. Brooks Koepka retweeted Thomas’ post and wrote: “And LIV players…” And that opened up a can of worms in his comment section.

Besides Brooks Koepka, Max Homa had also spoken up on the matter, in his own witty manner, of course. Coming back to Koepka’s tweet, while the negative comments mostly stuck to criticizing the LIV golfer, there were some comments to support Alan Shipnuck as well.

Koepka has no business commenting!

The comments covered a wide range of perspectives. They included bashing Koepka for siding with LIV golf, cracking a joke on Rory McIlroy’s hatred for anything LIV, and taking digs at Koepka’s alleged personal flaws.

This commenter overruled Koepka’s opinion for being a LIV golfer. They seemed more fixated on the Saudi money angle.

Alan Shipnuck would be quite pleased to see this comment. Needless to say, not Brooks Kopeka.

A dig at Brooks Koepka again. Clearly, this fan doesn’t hold LIV Golf in high regard. They think Koepka had no business here.

Same as the above. So much contempt for LIV Golf! A lot of dislike appears to come from the fact the league is owned by the Saudis.

This is unbelievable! Brooks Koepka appears to have no buyers. One burning comment after another! This should hurt, all the more after the poor Ryder Cup show.

This is probably the wittiest comment in this conversation, and also the commenter has a point.

Just when we thought the commenters couldn’t get wittier.

Well, the comment section makes it look like the fans are against LIV golfers. What do think of Koepka’s response? Do you think he has a point? Let us know in the comments section below.

For someone who has avidly followed sports even before I joined Essentially Sports, my transition to a golf writer has been immensely exciting. The sport has a certain calmness to it that attracts me. Much like every golf enthusiast. I, too, have many favorites in the golf world. Max Homa's humor makes me laugh, Rory McIlroy's intensity makes me curious, while Celine Boutier's awkwardness helps me relate more to these athletes and the sport, and Nelly Korda's smile just always mesmerizes me! Hence, diving in depth into all their lives and more is more than a joyous experience.
