Medical conditions often impact a person’s ability to perform, One such player is Phil Mickelson. The American sensation today enjoys the pleasure of being one of the most prominent names in golf. However, little does one know that apart from being a 6-time major champion, Mickelson is also a patient of psoriatic arthritis.

Mickelson was diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis a week after his T4 finish at the 2010 U.S. Open. However, known for never giving up, the former World No. 2, not only fought the disease but also took a noble step. Close to a year after his diagnosis, he took the initiative to spread awareness about his condition. The result? He launched an awareness campaign.
Phil Mickelson launches ‘On Course with Phil’ campaign
Nine months into his treatment, in March 2011, Mickelson tied up with pharmaceutical companies Amgen and Pfizer to launch the ‘On Course with Phil’ campaign. Announcing the campaign, he went back in time, recalling his early days of diagnosis.
“After being diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis in the week following the 2010 U.S. Open, I immediately sought the help of a rheumatologist to learn about my condition,” he said. “By getting an early diagnosis, I was able to start my treatment right away with the goal of helping to slow or stop the progression of irreversible damage to my joints.”

Tying up with the pharmaceutical giants, Mickelson launched the campaign to educate people about chronic inflammatory joint and skin conditions. Being a patient of psoriatic arthritis himself, the former World No. 2 seemed well versed will the implications of not getting the right treatment.

Launching the campaign, Mickelson along with Amgen and Pfizer aimed at helping patients with psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or plaque psoriasis by guiding them the right way by working with a medical specialist to build a treatment plan for them.

Opening up about his intention behind the campaign, he said “My experience has inspired me to motivate and empower others with chronic inflammatory joint and skin conditions to take action.”

Psoriatic arthritis is a non-curable disease. However, early diagnosis and timely treatment have helped Mickelson stagnate any further damage to his joints. He continues to be a patient of the disease. However, his prompt action has helped him keep the level of the damage in a controlled state.
