Rory McIlroy in LIV Golf! This statement looks like an unrealistic one at the start. The Irish golfer has been a PGA Tour loyalist from the start. Furthermore, he has acted as a player director for the traditional league. But why is his move to the breakaway league making the rounds on the internet? Well, it is because his former agent pointed him in that direction!
Recently, Chubby Chandler, the former agent of McIlroy, claimed he was looking to join LIV Golf. He said, “If you were being cynical, you might say he’s going to sign for about £750million in a month with LIV because he’s paving the way that LIV’s okay now, whereas it wasn’t.”

The former agent gave the example of Jon Rahm, stating that if he can do it, so can McIlroy. He also pointed out that the constant clashing with his fellow PGA Tour players is causing him to make this decision. But he said there is only a “10% possibility” for him to join LIV Golf. Especially in recent months, the Northern Irishman’s actions on the PGA Tour and comments regarding the rebel league further fanned the already growing rumors.
Will the PGA Tour lose Rory McIlroy to LIV Golf?
Despite there being a 10 percent chance of the Irish golfer switching to LIV Golf, many factors are pointing in that direction. The biggest factor will be his surprise departure from the player-director role. While he served as a player director, he was openly critical of the Saudis and LIV Golf.
But in November 2023, McIlroy resigned from his role out of the blue. At that time, he stated that this decision was a result of constant stress and that he wanted to step away from the politics of golf. But another thing that happened after his resignation was his change of tune. Rory McIlroy is now completely in favor of the merger between PIF and the PGA Tour.

His support for the PIF goes so far that he clashed with Jordan Spieth for the same. Spieth was speaking against the merger, claiming the recent $3 billion investment from SSG was more than enough for the traditional league. However, the Irish golfer felt otherwise and showed his protest over Spieth’s comments by leaving the group of high-profile golfers.
Now his former manager is claiming there is a chance that the Irish golfer will switch to LIV Golf. But only time will tell how much weight this rumor carries. However, if Rory McIlroy switches to LIV Golf, it will be a big blow to the PGA Tour.
