The quarterfinals of the LIV Golf Team Championship saw the best teams of the LIV Golf Team clash with one another. Eight teams went head-to-head and put up a tough fight to get through the quarterfinals. Among them, the journey of four teams ended with their elimination from the championship.

Out of the eight remaining teams, four got the golden chance to handpick their preferred rival. The captains did not only choose but also revealed the reason behind their choice. And the most intriguing choice and reason was, believe it or not, that of Dustin Johnson. So why did he go after golf’s beloved Lefty with his choice?

Dustin Johnson gets the first pick and chooses Phil Mickelson

Apart from the winners from the Friday quarterfinals, four other teams had a bye to them. Johnson’s team, the 4 Aces, were the No. 1 seed and had the first opportunity to choose their opponent for the upcoming semifinals.

When the time came to make a choice, Dustin Johnson did not spare a second and revealed the name of the team. Which happened to be the HyFlyers. HyFlyers GC, led by their captain Phil Mickelson, defeated the Brooks Koepka-captained Smash GC in a nail-biting game of golf and advanced to the next stage of the championship.

Upon being selected as the rival team, Phil Mickelson acknowledged the 4 Aces to be the strongest team in the league, who had also won the previous year’s title. Even though the HyFlyers are going up against the top dogs of the championship, their captain does not seem to be much worried about it. 

The American golfer seems to be very happy with his team. Even though facing the leading team is quite a daunting task, it looks like the captain of the HyFlyers has a lot of faith in his teammates.

Like a true sportsman, Mickelson promised to present their A-game and said, “We know it’ll be a challenge. But we had a lot of fun today. We got a lot out of it. We’re going to try to recover, recuperate, build on it, and put up a good fight tomorrow.” DJ, on the other hand, was quite quiet throughout the presser, and when he did reveal why he picked out Lefty, it wasn’t the reason anyone expected!

Johnson unveils the reason behind his choice

A lot of thought, planning, and pondering must go into choosing one’s opponent. However, it appears not to be the case for the captain of the 4 Aces.

A man of few words, when asked the reason behind the choice, DJ simply answered that it was not only him behind the decision but so was the entire team, and in a very nonchalant manner he stated, “Well, I was sitting over here with the team and they wanted to play the HyFlyers, so I said okay.”

The final countdown for the title has started. Will the 4 Aces be able to defend their title or will there be a new team crowned as the winner of the LIV Golf Team Championship?
