Australian golfer Cameron Smith has a shining golfing career. The 2022 Open winner has an impressive portfolio. Besides playing on the PGA Tour, he has represented his country Australia in several team events, has three Australian PGA Championships, and has even been No.2 in the world. Last year, he gained widespread attention when he decided to leave the PGA Tour and join the controversial LIV Golf. However, after moving to LIV he has displayed ultimate showmanship.

He became the captain of LIV’s team Punch GC and his team finished second in the Miami Team championship. He won the LIV Golf Invitational Series in Chicago. In fact, he won five times across multiple tours last year. And he is currently playing at the $25 million LIV Golf Invitational London event at the Centurion Club. During its second round on Friday, he ran off seven birdies and had a one-shot lead over Marc Leishman with good chances of winning the high stakes.

The early career of Cameron Smith’s caddie

Sam Pinfold was born in Wellington, New Zealand. In his childhood, Pinfold learned to play golf at the Whitby Golf Club after that he played at Manor Park. He represented his club in the Duncan Cup competition. He has also represented his state Wellington in the Junior age-group teams (Under 18 and Under 21) and the 10-man senior team.

When he was on PGA Tour, Pinfold was hailed for his work ethic and professionalism. But he earned these titles after years of practice and hard workAt the age of 22, Pinfold knew if he wanted to turn professional then he needed to do better at his game and improve. Hence, he moved to the Gold Coast and took up a golf position at Royal Pines. For 18 months, Sam worked there until one day a call from an old friend brought a major change in his life.

It was the year 2007 and his friend Brad Iles was going back to the US after qualifying for his Nationwide tour card. Upon Brad’s request, Pinfold became his caddie for what he thought will be a short gig. Accompanying Brad in America he learned a lot on the course. He also developed a friendship with Marc Leishman and his caddie Matty Kelly. In 2012, after Brad lost his Nationwide Tour playing status, Pinfold went on to caddie for players like Aron Price, Scott Gardiner, Ryo Ishikawa, and Brendan Steele.

In 2015, Pinfold became Cameron Smith’s caddie and the pair hasn’t looked back since then. Together Smith and Pinfold have made numerous achievements. In 2017, Smith won his career’s first PGA Tour event, the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Next year in 2018, he won the Australian PGA Championship. After that in 2020, they won the Sony Open in Hawaii. Smith’s career major victory came last year when he won Open Championship.

In fact, Smith’s victory at the British Open in Scotland was credited to Pinfold by the Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club members. According to them, Pinfold kept Smith calm and concentrated on the field. Pinfold’s friend from the club, David Pollock said that it was Pinfold’s easy-going approach that made all the difference. Last year after Smith decided to change leagues and move to LIV Golf, Pinfold went along with him.

In his personal life, Pinfold appears to be very private and reserved. He has a private Instagram account. But on the golf course, he and Smith share a wonderful equation and are a force to reckon with. And as Smith gives an impressive performance at the LIV event in London, Pinfold’s contribution comes to the fore once again.
