Phil Mickelson and his wife, Amy Mickelson, are quite a study in contrast. While the Lefty has courted much controversy for his arrogance and his myriad vices, his wife has been a gentle soul who has embraced most people with open arms. 

Although, in their 27 years of marriage, rarely did the golfer’s wife come under the limelight, veteran sports journalist, Alan Shipnuck revealed that the Californian has always stood as a rock-solid pillar behind her husband. And, now Phil Mickelson, himself, admits that she has done more for him and his team, staying under the radar, all the while.

Phil Mickelson speaks glowingly about his wife

Phil Mickelson was in Trump Doral for the LIV season-ender last week. At the Blue Monster, he joined in for a brief chat with Su-Ann Heng, the former Singaporean golfer turned commentator. 

Asked about how he manages the dual role of being a captain and the team owner of the HyFlyers GC, the 53-year-old LIV Pro revealed he received a lot of help from his peers and his wife. He does not make any decisions alone but consults with Cameron Tringale and Brendan Steele, his two teammates, for any decisions. “We have good people doing a lot of the hard work. It makes it a lot easier for us,” claims the 45-time PGA-Tour victor.

However, it’s not just his brother-in-arms who help him ease his dual role. His wife, Amy Mickelson, feeds the veteran golfer with innovative ideas to strengthen team bonding. “My wife Amy is very creative and helpful and (has) got great ideas and so we’ve got a good unity in our team.”

It’s not new for the six-time Major winner to praise his wife, though. Earlier he confessed to his gambling addiction and revealed that in the worst times, it was his wife who stood by him. Amy Mickelson is known for her amiable nature. Even Alan Shipnuck, whose name will perhaps draw more than a scoff from the veteran golfer at this point, spoke glowingly about his wife.

Shipnuck in his Mickelson biography, “Phil: The Rip-Roaring (and Unauthorized!) Biography of Golf’s Most Colorful Superstar” divulged the role his wife plays in the former PGA pro’s life. Amy Mickelson is known to accompany the golfer in most of the tournaments. The veteran sports writer had the opportunity to talk to her on the greens.

The Lefty is known for his short temper. However, his wife is the complete opposite. As per the author, whenever the golfer made an untoward gesture, the Californian would gasp “Oh Phillip”. Not just that the veteran golfer’s wife would also greet every journalist with a hug wherever they met. A sweet contrast indeed.

As Mickelson’s own admission reveals, Amy Mickelson didn’t just salvage the reputation of the golfer but actually played a more vital part in the team building, all the while staying behind the limelight.
