What does a man do when the sports league he is leading racks up millions in losses annually? Well, if you’re Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the answer isn’t retreating behind closed doors. Instead, it’s belting out “Sweet Caroline” in front of a crowd.

LIV Golf has used exorbitant contracts to lure PGA Tour and DP World Tour stars. Jon Rahm’s $300 million, Phil Mickelson’s $200 million, and Brooks Koepka’s $130 million are just mere examples of how much the league has spent. Purists have since been wondering when LIV Golf’s pockets will run out of money. And it’s out now. LIV Golf Ltd, the UK-based entity managing LIV’s operations outside the US, reported losses of £461.8 million ($590.1 million) in 2024. This brought the total losses to £1.1 billion ($1.4 billion) since its inception in 2021.
One would think that these reports might make LIV Golf chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan avoid the limelight. But to many people’s surprise, he not only made an unexpected appearance but also sang ‘Sweet Caroline’ at an Alfred Dunhill Links Championship event on October 5, 2025.

This is not the first time Al-Rumayyan has appeared at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. He first appeared in the 2023 edition to participate in the pro-am with LIV Golf athlete Peter Uihlein. But that time, though, his appearance was a little subtle. He used the pseudonym “Andrew Waterman” until the last minute. His actual name was only added at around 2.41 pm local time on October 4, 2023.
He also played the 2024 event, this time alongside the PGA Tour commissioner, Jay Monahan. Monahan was paired with Billy Horschel, while Al-Rumayyan played with Dean Burmester. Both pairs played the first round at the Carnoustie Golf Links.
But this time, he took it to a whole new level by singing and enjoying despite the heavy losses. Despite LIV Golf continuing to hemorrhage money, the interest of the governor of the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia towards the game and the league remains unwavering.
The annual filing disclosed by LIV Golf’s UK arm also says that it received a letter of support from Yasir. This support comes as the PIF governor is looking for a deal with the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour. “We reached out to them from Day 1. And unfortunately, things didn’t go very well,” Al-Rumayyan said. “But hopefully in the future we will be able to bring the game of golf together, and this — I mean, what I’m trying to do is not to claw back from the PGA or the DP World Tour. What I’m trying to do is increase the size of the pot,” he continued.
There have been no developments in what has now become a frosty deal with the PGA Tour. The PGA Tour banned golfers who joined LIV Golf, and the DP World Tour imposed additional fines. Although deals with both organizations seem skeptical, Al-Rumayyan is positive about the outlook. And with Donald Trump coming into the mix, it could happen sooner.
“Your own reporting, the talks are real. They’re substantial, and they are being driven at the top levels of both organizations. Those talks have been significantly bolstered by President Trump’s willingness to serve as a facilitator,” said Jay Monahan at a press conference before The Players’ Championship in March 2025.
Donald Trump is a businessman before everything else and is a powerful influence. With him acting as a facilitator, both organizations may soon find a common ground to grow the game together.
Coming back to Yasir singing Sweet Caroline, the celebratory event itself seems a little surprising after Storm Amy caused havoc at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

With winds reaching speeds up to 60 mph, organizers had to suspend multiple sessions at the 2025 event. On Friday, Round 2 was suspended midway in the afternoon because of heavy rain and unplayable conditions. On Saturday, organizers completed Round 2. They planned to adapt LIV Golf’s shotgun start format for Round 3 at 12:30 pm local time. However, just minutes into play, the hosts had to cancel the entire Day 3 schedule. According to the latest update, the DP World Tour reduced the number of holes from 72 to 54.
The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship faced similar hurdles in 2023, too. That time, the management extended play until Monday instead of reducing the rounds. Matt Fitzpatrick won the 2023 event with 19 under par, followed by Marcus Armitage, Ryan Fox, and Matthew Southgate tied at second.

This time, Robert Macintyre is currently at the top of the leaderboard. He has completed his 3 rounds at 18 under par with a score of 66-66-66. Following him is fellow 2025 Ryder Cup star Tyrrell Hatton with 14 under par. South African golfer Richard Sterne currently ties Tyrrell in second position. However, while the 8x DP World Tour winner has completed all his rounds, Sterne is yet to play holes 7, 8, and 9 at the time of writing this.
It will be worth watching if Sterne can get past Tyrrell and close the gap between him and Robert, or if the Scottish golfer ends at the top of the leaderboard.
