There hasn’t been going on outside the course between the tours for the merger. Though the biggest merger is yet far away from done. There have been updates on a new merger, which will be a great opportunity for players and a definite delight for the fans. Earlier, the DP World Tour and PGA Tour shared the same schedule and player lists, but now the latest move from LIV Golf has opened an opportunity for the Saudi-backed league players too.

The news of Greg Norman being replaced as the CEO wasn’t confirmed yet, here we get another curveball from the two leagues. Before the 2025 season, sources have confirmed to Golf Digest that for the replacement of Greg Norman, Scott O’Neil will be hired as the CEO of the league. He has been a sports and entertainment executive. However, the confirmation for it is expected by December.

Besides the change in the top position, there is good news that comes in for the fans and players. As per the report of Bloomberg, the DP World Tour and LIV Golf are in talks for a merger. With the merger news, both leagues will be sharing their schedule and opportunities for players to participate in the tournaments. Following on, a spokesperson for the DP World Tour told Bloomberg, “We remain in discussions with the PGA Tour, PGA Tour Enterprises, SSG and PIF relating to the ongoing overall picture for men’s global golf, but no agreements have been reached.”

The merger between the three leagues seems far away still as the deadline has passed, and there is not much development on it. Now, with the merger between the two, it would open doors for players to get into the DP Tour without the fines and restrictions on playing at LIV Golf.

Even during an interview with Bunkered, Asian Tour Chief Cho Minn Thant has been in favor of the merger. He was asked “Some players I’m speaking with here are saying the DP World Tour should ditch its alliance with PGA Tour and create a worldwide circuit with the Asian Tour and LIV, funded by the PIF. Could you see that happening?” While answering it he said, “Well, this week is a great example of it.”

He even pointed out the fact that a merger could be beneficial by stating, “Our membership is diversifying. If we can have two, three, four more events like these a year, that would be massive. The world golf rankings available are high this week.” Though there is still very limited information available about the merger, it can be seen as a possibility in the schedule of 2025.

Merger possibility schedule for the DPWT and LIV Golf

The talks between the two leagues have just been reported, but there hasn’t been any confirmation. How the PGA Tour will agree to this merger is still a question. But the interesting change is what can be seen in the schedule for the first five tournaments of LIV Golf and DP World Tour, pointing strongly towards the merger. Earlier in the 2024 season, the tournaments of both leagues were clashing and made it difficult for the players to participate in both.

However, now it seems leagues have gotten into a mutual agreement and have strategically aligned the tournaments for the 2025 season. We for now can call it a coincidence as there is no surety of the merger, but it surely doesn’t look like it! The 2025 season will offer a great opportunity for players to manage to stay at the course as there will be a back-to-back tournament. For example, Singapore which includes the DP World Tour’s Porsche Singapore Classic and LIV Singapore starting on March 16th and 20th. The players will be having just a few day’s break between the two events. Besides this, only the LIV Hong Kong and the Joburg Open seem to be clashing on the schedule, the rest of the events can be easily played by the golfers.

The complete story is yet to unfold as we move ahead to the 2025 season. It will be interesting to see how both leagues merge while keeping the PGA Tour in the loop. What will happen is still a question, but for the players and fans, it’s a good direction to follow. What are your thoughts on the merger? Do you see the merger happening?
