The PGA Tour Rookie of the Year 2010, Rickie Fowler, is in the news again and this time the reason is his long-time coach, John Tillery. He fired his caddie last month and is now ready to fire his swing instructor as well.

Fowler took this decision, and Tillery confirmed it with ESPN. But what was the reason behind him firing his coach, who helped him and his swings evolve? Let’s dig deeper and understand.

Why Rickie Fowler fired his caddie

Last month, Fowler parted ways with caddie, Joe Skovron after 13 long years. This came to us as a shock. Fowler has now collaborated with Ricky Romano, the veteran looper. Next week in Napa, California, at the Fortinet Championship, the season opener of the 2022-23 PGA Tour campaign, Fowler will be seen with his new man on the bag. After choosing him, he made a funny comment that his new caddie is about his own size, which is good for him, as he won’t look too small.

Fowler grew up in Romano’s hometown of California and is four years older than him. He is quite experienced and has played for the University of Houston and many mini tours before he turned his career direction towards caddying. Fowler chose him because he was someone he knew well and could trust. He knew Romano was a good player and his guidance would help him improve his game.

Fowler parted ways with his coach too

Pro golfer, Rickie Fowler, hired John Tillery in 2019 when his ex-coach Butch Harmon decided not to travel, and excluded it from his teaching schedule. People were not sure about the Fowler’s coach of choice. And, evidently, Fowler’s time with Tillery was not very fruitful.

After parting his ways with Tillery, Fowler told that it was time to let go as they were not clicking anymore. In an interview with Golfweek, he said, “I couldn’t love the guy any more, and we gave it a good run but it was almost like speaking another language in a way and it never really clicked.”

Their chemistry was lost somewhere. Even people on Twitter believed that this change was long overdue. Fowler also said that he had spent some great time with Tillery. It is not like the last few years did not matter to him at all. He believed he had gained lots of knowledge and is in a good spot right now. Fowler wishes that he could have played significantly better before.

They have both parted ways, but they are focused. Fowler missed the FedEx Cup playoffs in 2021 but was able to make his first playoffs in the current season at no. 125, whereas his former coach Tillery continues to coach Kevin Kisner, Sepp Straka, and Hudson Swafford. The last two won the tour this season.
