“I Am Disappointed”: Defending Champ Ashleigh Buhai Confesses Her Aching Thoughts After Her Steep AIG Women’s Open Downfall

The fifth major of the 2023 women’s golf season is almost in its final leg, and the competition has been immensely fierce this time. Prominent female golfers went head-to-head with each other, but alas! A few of them couldn’t make it to the weekend even after they gave it their all.

One of the names that missed the cut at the 2023 AIG Women’s Open is Ashleigh Buhai, who was the defending champion this year in the field. It is indeed a sad feeling for any golfer if they fail to defend their title successfully. The 2022 AIG Women’s Open winner shared her disappointment after her steep downfall.

The South African golfer was among the favorites this year to win the tournament, but sadly, she missed the cut. On the first day of the game, she hit a double bogey on the fourth hole and could not recover from it. Her final score on Thursday was 2 over. She returned to the course on Friday with zeal to make up for her previous day’s game but failed after she hit five bogeys and put the score of 1 over on the card.

But after two continuous days of double bogeys and bogeys, the golfer just ended up missing the cut and was out of the $9 million race. The moment was indeed disappointing forher , and she went ahead and made a heartfelt confession about it on her Instagram.

The golfer wrote, “To say I am not disappointed to not have made a better defense is an understatement.” She continued her confession that this is just how the game of golf operates with all the uncertainties, and it teaches the golfers to make peace with highs and lows. She also extended her thanks to the title sponsors of the tournament for elevating the game for women. 

While she was expressing her disappointment with her performance, she also spoke about how she could not wait to compete in the tournament next year at St. Andrews. Ashleigh Buhai was not the only prominent golfer who missed the cut and left the golf world weeping.

Other notable players who missed the cut this week

Buhai was not the only player who missed the cut for the weekend in the $9 million race that fans were looking forward to. After the tournament’s second round concluded, a few other names that shockingly missed the cut this year were Brooke Henderson, Lydia Ko, Jennifer Kupcho, and Lexi Thompson. Henderson’s overall score that led to her missing the cut was 3 over, whereas Ko scored an aggregate score of 4 over after the two rounds.

After two rounds of 78, and 70, Kupcho sadly missed the cut. Thompson’s unfortunate rounds of 76 and 75 led to her missing the cut by an aggregate of 7 over.
