On Sunday, Celine Boutier carded a 3-under 68 at the Evian Resort Golf Club to win her maiden major by six strokes! In doing so, Boutier not only became the third Frenchwoman ever to win a major but also the first homegrown winner of the Evian Championship.

LPGA’s Celine Boutier was born in Clamart, France, which is located a little more than five hours southeast of the town of Evian-les-Bains. 29 years later, the picturesque spa town, tucked at the bottom of the Alps, became the venue for her first-ever major win!

What makes her victory even more special is the fact that, until Boutier, France has never had one of its own win the lone women’s major in the country. Reflecting on her win during the post-fourth round presser, the LPGA phenom said, “If I was going to win one tournament it had to be Evian. Yeah, I just really did not expect it to be this week.

I just feel like so grateful to be able to share it with my family and with all the French spectators,” Boutier further added about the victory. “Such a great amount of support and positive energy and definitely fed off the crowd a little bit.” This is not the first time the golfer’s love for her country has come in the limelight. She also proudly represented France at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

For her win, Boutier took home $1 million in earnings, the biggest of the $6.5 million purse. Last year’s winner, Brooke Henderson, gave tough competition to the Frenchwoman but ultimately settled for a solo second-place finish.

During the final round at the Evian Resort Golf Club, Celine Boutier shot four birdies and one bogey to finish at 14-under 270. Her previous best finish at the major venue had been a T29 finish on two separate occasions. Last year, Boutier had missed the cut at the tournament, which was ultimately won by Canada’s Brooke Henderson.

Henderson was in blistering form this time around as well, as she carded a final-round 70 to finish at 8-under. For her heroics, the World No. 12 took home $585,967! A total of five players, including Yuka Saso and Nasa Hataoka, tied for the third spot at the major after finishing 7-under.

20-year-old prodigy Rose Zhang shot a 68 in her fourth round to tie for the 9th spot. This is Zhang’s third straight top-10 finish in a major event after tying for eighth place at the Women’s PGA Championship, and another T9 finish at the US Women’s Open.
