The dramatic final day of the $9 million event saw a complete shuffling of the scoreboard as the top golfers leading the run on Saturday found themselves behind other players in the lead. The same was the case with Ludvig Aberg as his dreams of a back-to-back win were shattered following his loss at the BMW PGA Championship. Moreover, the golf world watched the event with extreme tension as Ryan Fox grabbed his fourth win on the European Tour.

The New Zealand golfer saw himself taking home the biggest win of his career in the final round on Sunday. But what grabbed the attention of the people was his triumph over the Ryder Cup heroes, including Tyrrell Hatton and Rory McIlroy. Well, wouldn’t that make him a hero too in his own right?

Ryan Fox emerges victorious over Ryder Cup heroes

Although all of Luke Donald’s team made the cut at the BMW PGA Championship, none managed to emerge victorious as the tournament saw Fox making sure of the same. The Ryder Cup players failed to steal a win from the European pro as he pushed past all the national heroes to prevail at the championship following a spectacular closing 13 holes at Wentworth and taking home $1.53 million.

Although the Patriots showcased a fine display of golf, it was not enough to move past the second spot. Aberg, on whom all eyes were on from the start of the tournament, saw himself falter as he registered a 4-over-par 76 on Sunday. One can only imagine that the pressure of the championship got to the 23-year-old.

As the Swede struggled on one side, McIlroy, despite staring slow, saw himself placed at T7 with a spectacular 65 registering a score of 13-under 275, just five shy of the champ. Moreover, Hatton, who finished as a runner-up tied with Aaron Rai, couldn’t propel past the Kiwi as a loose drive on the 15th ended up costing him dearly despite making it seem like his day to claim the cup. Nevertheless, it was Fox’s scintillating performance that saw him hold off the Rome-bound Ryder Cuppers.

It would come off as a dismay of sorts for the European Ryder Cup skipper as he sees his team’s performance waver at the critical moment. But nevertheless, he would be proud after seeing a number of his players setting up a significant fight against Fox’s stunning showcase. Well now, one can’t help but be curious about the biggest win of his career.

The New Zealand professional scored a total of 18-under par 270 to register his 17th professional win and the fourth win on the European tour at the BMW PGA Championship. The 36-year-old carded a total of six birdies on the final nine, the last one coming from the 18th to score a 65 (-5), to clinch a one-shot victory over Rai and Hatton, who tailed him closely on the scoreboard.

His previous wins on the DP World Tour include a victory at the ISPS Handa World Super 6 Perth, the Ras Al Khaimah Classic, and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Although he managed to take part in various majors this year, his best finish only came out in the PGA Championship, where he finished tied for 23rd. Thus, a bumpy year of sorts for the golfer makes this win all the more special.
