Matt Fitzpatrick’s caddie Billy Foster is a well-known name in the world of golf. From the late Seve Ballesteros to Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia, Foster has been on the bag for many famed golfers in his illustrious career. The 58-year-old again came to the limelight when he was seen celebrating with Fitzpatrick during the 2023 RBC Heritage event.

Fitzpatrick, who became the first Englishman since Sir Nick Faldo to win the RBC Heritage, is now back in action at the Zurich Classic. However, many were surprised to find a new person in the bag for the golfer instead of Foster. But, the golfer on Saturday put speculations to rest by explaining the reason behind his caddie’s absence.

Matt Fitzpatrick explains Billy Foster’s absence

Fresh off winning $3,600,000 at Hilton Head, the world no. 8, Matt Fitzpatrick returned to action in the Zurich Classic at TPC Louisiana. The golfer and his brother Alex Fitzpatrick have formed one of the 80 two-player teams competing for the $8.6 million prize purse.

However, one face was notably missing as the brothers took the field in the Zurich Classic. Billy Foster has been a constant on Fitzpatrick’s side since 2018. Together, they have won several honors, including the 2022 U.S. Open. They were even seen celebrating Fitzpatrick’s heroics at the Hilton Head last week.

After the third round of the Zurich Classic drew to an end, the 28-year-old golfer shared that Foster was away taking a break during a press conference. He said, “Yeah, just a lot of travel for him. Made sense for him to have this one off.” The golfer also introduced his caddie for the ongoing tournament: “Scott — I’m not going to Butcher his second name. He’s an Aussie lad. He’s been great this week.

Billy Foster has caddied for many greats of the game

In his long career as a caddie, Billy Foster has stood witness to many golfers he has caddied for, going on to win top honors. However, the 58-year-old did not get to experience major glory until 2022, when English golfer Matt Fitzpatrick lifted the U.S. Open title. Foster joined the young golfer’s side in 2018 after parting ways with Lee Westwood.

Billy Foster began his career caddying for South African golfer Hugh Baiocchi. He also has Ryder Cup experience up his sleeves and caddied for the likes of Seve Ballesteros, Westwood, Sergio Garcia, Darren Clarke, and Tiger Woods, before partnering with Fitzpatrick.

The seasoned caddie has significantly influenced the English golfer’s game, which came to light during the 2022 U.S. Open. After his victory under arduous conditions, the golfer had shared that patience was key, and Foster had helped him with the same. Foster was also on the bag for the golfer when he edged past Jordan Spieth to clinch the 2023 RBC Heritage title.
