After months of anticipation, the TGL, created by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, is finally set to launch in January 2025. The league will introduce a unique, digital-first format that has never been seen in the golf world before, with a team-based structure. While the league has already garnered significant attention thanks to its star-studded lineup, the marketing efforts remain a key focus. Players are actively promoting the league, ensuring its visibility and excitement ahead of its debut.

However, during the promotion, the anticipation was not as great as they thought it would be. When Lucas Glover tried promoting the event by playing at the venue, the golf community found a lot of similarities to LIV Golf. And the digital and indoor aspect of golf, well that too was not taken in a very positive way. As it turns out, the golf community is not alone in this. Even some pros believe that there are certain laggings that the league needs to make to ensure success.

Charlie Hulme and Rickie Fowler recently appeared in the latest episode of the Smylie Kaufman Show, where they discussed elaborately about the league. To begin with, the audience for the TGL  will be made up of 1,500 fans seated around the field of play at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach. They will be able to listen to the conversations of the players through the speakers. Taking to this, Rickie Fowler pointed, It’ll come down to the players need to be you know fairly vocal and and talk through things um because there’s not going to be a bunch of people on the floor I mean there will be some people part of the telecast and helping you know to keep things going but um it’s ultimately us”.

Just like LIV Golf, this will be a team event, and each team will be getting only two timeouts throughout. Managing the shots, having some audio input, and keeping the pressure in mind, is too little time, and this too might be an issue during the gameplay. “There might be one player that uses up all the timeouts for the team yeah yeah I think there’s gonna be some adjustments um I think there are going to be guys that do a lot better basically on camera for the entertainment side of it and there’s going to be guys that you know might struggle with it and have to learn a little bit”, added Fowler.

While most of the golf community believes that TGL will have a lot of gaps to fill, some have even come up and shared how the experience is going to be all new. And that too without compromising the true elements of golf.

Billy Horschel reveals that they will be hitting real shots

On Wednesday, Billy Horschel also made a promotional video for TGL. He unveiled the arena and all the bells and whistles that will be playing a significant role during the tournaments of the league. Well, it surely is not going to be any regular golf simulator. He stated how people might think it is rather weird to see them playing simulator golf as professionals. But it’s not entirely digital.

What’s your perspective on:

Will TGL's digital format revolutionize golf, or is it just another LIV Golf fiasco waiting to happen?

Have an interesting take?

“We’re hitting off real grass, we’re hitting real golf shots. Yes, there will be some artificial surfaces but there is a lot of technology that is going into this. It’s not just thrown together, ‘let’s do this.’ This is a lot of high-tech stuff and the way they’ve created the competition,” he said. Billy Horschel also mentioned that a lot was happening behind the scenes in the TGL, which would make it stand out from traditional golf courses. He emphasized that the league was designed to be different, new, and vast, aiming to engage viewers within a two-hour window. According to Horschel, fans would be able to see every golf shot, with players being more engaged than they typically are during PGA Tour events.  So, do you think this league is going to be a success, or yet another chaos brought up in the golf world?
