Winning a championship title is a proud moment for everyone. However, winning a championship while making your country proud is something that every sports entity dreams of. That is what happened to Leona Maguire when she won her maiden title at the Drive on Championship.

The 2022 LPGA Drive on Championship is the first title of the 27-year-old golfer. However, this is not the first time she has been showcased her talent to the golf world. Maguire was the Ladies’ British Open Amateur Champion in 2017.

She had also received many awards, including the ANNIKA Award as the National Player of the Year, GolfStat Cup Award winner, and The 2016-17 WGCA National Player of the Year.

Maguire won the LPGA title with a total score of 18-under and won the prize money of $225,000. America’s Lexi Thompson won the second with 15-under while Sarah Schmelzel secured third with 14-under.

Although she has received many awards, the win at the LPGA event will always be special to her. Since it was the first time an Irish woman golfer won an LPGA title, the win became special to an entire country. Once she shared her victory on her social media, congratulatory messages from her country began to pour in.

Fans reaction to the victory of Irish golfer Leona Maguire at the LPGA event 

It is the first time ever an Irish woman golfer has won an LPGA event. So, athletes, golfers, and sports reporters of her country congratulated her on her victory. English golfer Ross Fisher wrote, “Congrats on what will surely be the 1st of many more to come. Well done to your bag man Dermot.”

Four-time Olympian and Sport Ireland board member Olive Loughnane also commented on Maguire’s tweet. She wrote: “So thrilled for you Leona. It’s great to see you up where you belong.” 

Irish golf fans took this opportunity to tell Maguire how she made them all proud by winning the LPGA title. One of them wrote: “Huge congratulations on an amazing achievement. You’re an inspiration!!”

Many wished this would be the “first of many.” The wish had so much meaning since this is a maiden victory for her as well as for all Irish women golfers.

The 2022 LPGA drive on Championship will be the proudest moment of Maguire’s career for so long. We, too, wish her and her country that this will be the first of many wins to come.
