Augusta National is known for its grandeur and competitive spirit, but the unannounced arrival of a competitor’s mother brought tears to everyone’s eyes. In 80 golfers aged 7 to 15 from 31 states, there was one young girl, Dixie Mae Crain. In a competition that tests skills in driving accuracy, chipping, and putting, Dixie’s mother, Sherry Crain, was unable to support her as she qualified for the national finals.

“Tonight I get to see my kids for the first time in almost 10 months. I’m on an 18-month deployment to Bahrain with Task Force 515. I’m just trying to make it through the next few months so I can get home,” said the mother, grateful for the opportunity to meet her daughter. As Dixie’s achievements were listed, a video of her mother congratulating her was played afterwards. It left Dixie, his father, and his brother crying. Little did they know that they would soon get a chance to hug their mother in person.
