The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Canada will host the next edition of the President’s Cup in September 2024. Captains for the US team and the International team are Jim Furyk, and Mike Weir respectively. The appointments happened more than a year back.

Recently, Mike Weir spoke about including LIV golfers in the President’s Cup International team. The discussion focused on whether we can expect any updates on the matter soon. Weir shared his thoughts on the same and spoke about Cam Smith in particular.

Mike Weir expressed his feelings about the delay in receiving official communication on this matter. “I’m anxious and hopeful about hearing something sooner than later.” Although Weir may not have taken a stand, he sounded quite enthusiastic about picking a few names from the list of LIV golfers.

Weir particularly backed Cam Smith. He was talking about performances and rankings and felt that Cam Smith has been impressive in his opinion. “Right now, Cam Smith is the only guy that’s up high,” he said approvingly.

He further stressed how getting an update soon is paramount to work on the names for the team. Mike Weir clearly sounded eager to find some certainty in the aspect by this year’s end. “Hopefully by the end of the year, we’ll start looking at these players.” He reiterated how “Cam Smith is definitely one of our horses.”

Like the Ryder Cup, it is possible while the US team may include LIV golfers in the mix, the other team may not do the same. However, since Mike Weir sounds optimistic, it may not actually be the same case with the President’s Cup as it was with the Ryder Cup.

Will the President’s Cup International team face the same rules as the Ryder Cup Europe team?

After several PGA Tour players moved to LIV Golf, naturally they were not playing on the PGA Tour anymore. So they had to work harder to pile up points because of a limited number of events. No LIV Golfer made it to the top six. Barring Brooks Koepka, nobody was picked by the captain either. In fact, the European Ryder Cup team didn’t have any LIV golfers in it at all.

Although there is a probability that the same situation might repeat in the President’s Cup as well, it might actually be different. The International team is not the same as a European team. With other countries getting involved in the matter, the DP World Tour might relent. Anything is possible.
