It has been almost a decade since Rory McIlroy last tasted success at a major in golf. His search for that may not have ended yet, but just hours ago he found another extraordinary achievement. There is a first time for everything, and for the Irishman, his first career hole-in-one on the PGA Tour came at the ongoing Travelers Championship.

It was undoubtedly a huge milestone in the golfer’s career, and he drew a lot of attention for it. However, with what he did soon after accomplishing his first ace, he has garnered even more attention from the fans!

McIlroy’s grand gesture at the Travelers Championship

Nine years is a long time to wait for a big win, which McIlroy seeks at every major tournament. And though it may not have fallen into his lap yet, Rory was highly compensated in its place today. On Thursday at Cromwell, the golf pro drove a brilliant shot at the 214-yard par-3 and carded his first ever career hole-in-one on the PGA Tour.

Following the shot, McIlroy raised his hands in the air to celebrate and shook hands with everyone around him, congratulating him. However, on cloud nine, the 4-time major winner found an even better way to celebrate the moment, for both him and the fans. He threw his first ever ace ball (probably worth a significant amount of money) into the stands!

Given his latest disappointment at the US Open, the ace must have certainly felt like a fresh start, which perhaps will inspire the PGA Tour star to go on and grab a win this week. Regardless, he was ecstatic about it, and in the interview that followed, he even described it as “the best shot of the day.” He stated, “It’s obviously a bonus for it to go in the hole, but it was really cool.” Well, the fans thought so too, especially with his extravagant celebration!
